US Seeks To Drastically Cut Nicotine Content In Cigarettes

Jun 22, Kathmandu: United States(US) is preparing to announce a new policy to reduce nicotine levels to "unhealthy" levels. For this, the government is holding discussions with the producers.

The government's move on cigarettes is expected to hit the tobacco industry hard. If successful, this policy could save millions of lives by the end of this century and shape the future, where smoking will no longer be responsible for addiction and debilitating diseases.

Thousands of other chemicals in tobacco products and their fumes cause cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease, and diabetes. Although smoking is less prevalent in the United States than in Europe, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is responsible for 480,000 deaths each year in the country.

According to the CDC, about 13.7 percent of all American adults smoke. The issue of reducing nicotine levels in cigarettes has been a topic of discussion among US officials for years. According to the CDC, the total economic cost of smoking is more than 300 billion per year.
