Nov 23, Kathmandu- Students studying medical education are protesting against the increase in examination fees. Manmohan Medical College, Little Angel College, Nist Medical College, and other colleges protested against the increase in examination fees.

They started the protest by saying that the Institute of Medical Sciences (IOM) has increased the fees for various levels of examinations. Earlier, the examination fee of 2 thousand 500 was charged for re-examination on the regular side. Students allege that IOM increased the fee for re-examination (supplementary) to 11,500 without prior information. After the IOM increased the fee without any information, the agitation was started in conjunction with the medical education struggle campaign.

In the campaign, General Secretary Saugat Pandey said that a dharna was started in front of the Dean's office in protest against the increase in examination fees. He alleged that they had informed the Dean's office not to increase the fee and ignored the demand and increased the fee.

The Dean's office has clarified that the fee has not been increased since the students started protesting against the increased fees. On October 30th, a meeting with the representatives of the affiliated colleges chaired by the Dean decided to keep the examination form fee of 2,500 the same for students studying at the graduate level.

Likewise, the decision made by the Dean's office on the 3rd of February 2022 regarding the students' re-examination fee was decided to be implemented by the college and the Dean's office and the college itself would bear all the expenses from the amount deducted from the examination fee by the colleges. In the coming days, the Dean's office and the colleges had scientifically studied the examination fee and discussed whether it should be increased/reduced and decided to take a decision in the next meeting.

The students allege that the notice issued by the Dean's office is intended to suppress the voice of the students without providing clear information.

He said that he will continue the protest until their demands are heard. He said that not only Tribhuvan University but also medical colleges under other universities are charging arbitrary fees.
