Jan 28, Kathmandu- Rabi Lamichhane's old citizenship has been declared illegal and his court marriage has also been annulled.

The Supreme Court ruled that the citizenship obtained from the Kathmandu District Administration in Falgun 2050, 2070 after obtaining American citizenship, was illegal. The Supreme Court ruled that all the legal work he did on the basis of his Nepali citizenship after getting American citizenship was illegal. After renouncing American citizenship, Lamichhane was required to regain Nepali citizenship, but he did not do so and according to Section 10(1) of the Citizenship Act, his candidacy for the position of a member of the House of Representatives was canceled on the basis of his citizenship. Lamichhane and Nikita Paudel had a court marriage on January 28, 2021, at the Kathmandu District Court.

Even though the legal relationship with Nikita becomes void due to the annulment of the court marriage, their social and cultural relationship remains. In order to maintain the marriage legally, he will have to regain Nepali citizenship and apply again to the Kathmandu District Court.

While Lamichhane is an American citizen, the passport taken in Nepal in 2075 has also become illegal. According to legal experts, he can be prosecuted for the crime of having a double passport along with the accusation of stealing government documents.
