Russian Attack On Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure

Mar 22, Kathmandu- Russia attacked Ukraine's energy infrastructure early Friday morning, damaging power facilities in several regions, Ukrainian officials said.

The Interfax-Ukraine news agency quoted Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, chief executive officer of the Ukrainian-owned energy company Ukrenergo, as saying that the airstrike was "probably the largest attack ever" on the Ukrainian energy system.

Kudritsky said that cruise missiles, Shahed drones and ballistic missiles were used in the attack. He said Russian forces targeted thermal and hydroelectric power plants as well as the main power substation operated by Ukrainergo.

Ukraine's state-run hydropower company, Ukraine Hydronergo, said the attack took place at Dniprohes, Ukraine's largest hydropower station in the southern city of Zaporizhia. A fire broke out in Dnipropetrovsk after the attack, but there was no danger of the dam breaking, the company said via telegram.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia had fired more than 60 combat drones and about 90 missiles of various types into Ukraine overnight.
