Wife Died, Husband Injured In An Elephant Attack

Mar 28, Kathmandu- A woman has died after being attacked by a wild elephant in Shivasatakshi Municipality of Jhapa. Her husband has been injured in the attack.

Police Inspector of the District Police Office Dhundiraj Giri informed that 60-year-old Pavitra Bhetuwal, a local resident, died on the spot after being attacked by a wild elephant in the forest area of Ratuwamai Plantation Project located in Shivasatakshi-11. She had gone to the forest to collect firewood on Wednesday evening.

Police inspector Giri said that the team deployed from the Jhiljile area police office, which is seven kilometres south of the incident site, rescued 62-year-old Dilip Bhetuwal, husband of Pavitra, from the incident site and took him to Purnatung Virta City Hospital in Birtamod for treatment. The victim's mouth, hands and various parts of the body were injured.

Five people have been killed in elephant attacks in the district since Shrawan this year. A wild elephant destroyed the house of Nanda Prasad Paudel and Durga Basnet of Bahrghare in Arjundhara Municipality-9 on Wednesday. The elephant has also eaten the grains in the barn. Earlier on Tuesday, the elephant had eaten the corn of the field of Aitaraj Limbu of Kamal Rural Municipality-5, Simle.

According to the police, elephants also destroyed the houses of Tanka Prasad Poudel, Chunu Danuwar and Dhansingh Tamang of Mechinagar Municipality-3 Dokandanda on Sunday.
