Locals People Spent Night In Open Air After Melamchi River Overflowed

June 16, Kathmandu-A concrete bridge connecting the district headquarters Chautara has been swept away by the flood that has been raging in the river corridor from Melachi Ola to Helambu. The concrete bridge connecting Melamchi via Nawalpur from Chautara was destroyed by the flood at around 2.45 pm.

The initial damage caused by the floods was Nakote Bridge in Helambu, Melamchi Drinking Water Headworks, Timbu Bazaar, Chanaute Bazaar, 8 fish farms along the riverbank, cultivable land, Ama Holmo Bus Park, and City Park.

According to local CP Dulal, billions of rupees have been lost in Melamchi including multi-purpose covered hall, Melamchi Fun Park, hotel restaurant, house building, farm, bridge, trout farm, etc. The actual details of the human casualties have not been released.

Most of those displaced by the Melamchi floods are now living in the open air.

Residents of the river corridor have risen to save their lives as the rising river is likely to erode their houses if the incessant rains do not stop. As the flow of the river is still the same, the panic has increased.

Residents of Helambu and Gyalthum have reached the market to save their lives. Meanwhile, the locals of Melamchi Bazaar have left their bags and settled on public land.

Dozens have gone missing due to the floods, according to the District Police Office. The rescue operation could not be carried out as the power supply was cut off. It was not immediately clear how much damage was done.

According to DSP Prakash Sapkota of the District Police Office, Sindhupalchowk, the problem has arisen due to incessant rains. The police office building in Helambu has been flooded. Locals have informed that the roads have been flooded.

The Indravati River was blocked for about an hour by a landslide above Larke inside Langtang National Park in Bhotang of Thangpal Village Municipality-3 last evening. Meanwhile, the Melamchi River was blocked by a landslide at Nakote above the Melamchi Drinking Water Source in Helmu Village Municipality-1.
