Jnauary 21, Kathmandu

The government has classified hoteliers. The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation has classified the hotels using the authority given by the Hotel, Lodge, Restaurant, Bar and Guide Rules 2038 BS.

According to the revised new standards made by the government, the services provided by the hotel should be available 24 hours a day. Similarly, five-star deluxe hotels within the Kathmandu Valley must have at least 20 to 150 bedrooms, according to the ministry.

According to the classification, the government has brought such arrangement by modifying the criteria of one-star to five-star hotels to 20 to 150 sleeping rooms in Kathmandu Valley and hotels to parks and protected areas outside the Kathmandu Valley.

The new classification has made it mandatory to have 100 rooms in a five-star hotel, 80 in a four-star hotel, 60 in a three-star hotel, 40 in a two-star hotel and 20 in a one-star hotel. Arrangements have been made to give five-star status to hotels with up to 40 bedrooms in parks outside Kathmandu and hotels within protected areas. Now, when opening a hotel in these areas, even if there are only 7 rooms, the hotel that has fulfilled other criteria will get star recognition. At present, there is an arrangement to have at least 15 rooms to be a one-star hotel outside the valley.

Similarly, 40 vehicles must be parked in a five-star deluxe hotel. Hotels without parking for 40 vehicles do not fall under the criteria of five-star deluxe. It has been mentioned in the revised criteria that there should be 40 vehicles in five-star, 20 in four-star, 15 in three-star, 10 in two-star and 5 in one-star. According to the new criteria, the registration fee for tourist level hotels, tourist accommodation, lodges, restaurants and bars has also been revised.

Along with the classification of hotels, the new fee for registering a tourist hotel is as follows:

1. Ordinary hotel - 5,000
2. One star hotel - 10,000
3. Two star hotel - 20,000
