February 1,Kathmandu
Today, March 19, is that day the then King Gyanendra took control of the country through a royal address, ending the democratic system. This day is considered as a black day in the democratic movement of Nepal.
Today is considered as a black day, saying that the government led by Sher Bahadur Deuba, formed from the parliamentary system, has been removed and a system of direct autocracy has been imposed.
Mangsir, 2062 B.S, is the day when the then King Gyanendra declared to take over the reins of government. Calling the self-appointed Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba incompetent, Gyanendra had announced the formation of a cabinet under his chairmanship. After that, political rights, human rights and press freedom were frustrated.
Gyanendra, who became king immediately after the Durbar massacre, had shut down his mobile and telephone lines, frustrating political rights, human rights and press freedom in the country, while the news on the radio was banned. Leaders of political parties were detained. But this situation did not last long. At that time, the telephone line was also cut and the army was mobilized in the media house.
Gyanendra's move united the then Maoist and parliamentary parties waging a people's war. The parties united against the direct rule of the king and the movement intensified. The beginning of the people's movement of 2062 BS and 2063 BS is also considered as a step of this day.
After a 12-point agreement was reached between the conflicting Maoists and the then seven parties in Delhi in December 2008, eight political forces, including the Maoists, staged an agitation against the monarchy. After the success of the same movement, the 238-year-old monarchy came to an end.
But even long after the end of the autocratic monarchy, the country has not been able to move forward from the transition period. Development work has not been able to pick up speed. If corruption has not been stopped, the living standards of the people have not been able to rise.
Even though the then King Gyanendra is now a common citizen, when he goes to different places, the slogan 'King, come and save the country' is used. Now the movement has started again in the country. The CPN (Maoist) government, which was formed after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli dissolved the House of Representatives on January 19 to provide stability to the country, has split into two due to its own party.
After that, the country has engaged in the practice of the federal structure of drafting a constitution through the Constituent Assembly. The Prachanda Nepal faction of the CPN (Maoist) is on the streets while the oil faction is pushing for elections on April 30 and May 10 .
