About 1,000 Died From Dengue In Bangladesh

Oct 02, Kathmandu- According to government data, more than 1,000 people have died from dengue in Bangladesh since the beginning of this year. This mosquito-borne disease is considered to be the worst epidemic in the country.

Dengue causes high fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, and most seriously, bleeding. Due to excessive bleeding, people may even die.

The World Health Organization has warned that diseases such as chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika, along with dengue transmitted by mosquitoes, are spreading more rapidly due to climate change.

According to the data published by the Directorate General of Health Services of Bangladesh on Sunday night, more than 200,000 people have died from dengue.

The former director of the general directorate, Benazir Ahmed, said that the number of people who died from dengue this year was higher than every year since 2000. "This is a big health event both in Bangladesh and the world", he said.

One hundred and twelve children under the age of 15, including infants, are among the dead. This figure is less compared to 2022. Two hundred and eighty-one children died of dengue that year.

Scientists have said that dengue outbreaks have increased due to the favorable environment for the breeding of mosquitoes due to the irregular rainfall in this year's monsoon as well as the hot temperature.

Although cases of dengue have been seen in Bangladesh since the 1960s, they have started keeping data on the outbreak of this disease since 2000.

Most dengue outbreaks occur during the monsoons from July to September, but hospitals in Bangladesh have admitted patients with the disease in recent years even during the winter months.

The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said in September that the dengue outbreak had put a lot of pressure on Bangladesh's system.
