Dhangadhi Sterilizing Community Dogs

Apr 07, Kathmandu- Dhangadhi sub-metropolitan city of Kailali has started a sterilization campaign for stray (community) dogs. After the problem was created due to stray (or community in today's language) dogs, the sub-metropolitan municipality has said that it has started a neutering campaign for control.

Dhangadhi sub-metropolitan city has been conducting community dog control campaign for a few years. The sub-metropolitan concludes that neutering is the most effective way to control ground black dogs.

The sub-metropolitan municipality has conducted a community dog neutering camp since Friday 24th of Chaitra. The sub-metropolitan municipality has stated that it has set a target of neutering at least three hundred community dogs in the current financial year 2080/081. According to the sub-metropolitan office, 123 community dogs were sterilized on Friday and Saturday. The Deputy Metropolitan Municipality has informed that the sterilization campaign of community dogs will be conducted till 26th of Chaitra.

Dr. Samir Kumar Thakur, head of the animal service branch of the sub-metropolitan city, said that at least three hundred community dogs will be sterilized in the camp. He said - in the current financial year, at least 300 black dogs will be sterilized. According to Animal Services Branch Chief Thakur, it is estimated that more than 7 lakh rupees will be spent on the community dog neutering program in the current financial year.

Dhangadhi sub-metropolitan city had sterilized 150 dogs under the community dog neutering campaign last financial year 2079/080.

Only the stray dogs will be sterilized during the camp which will last four days. Every year, the sub-metropolitan municipality has been organizing a spaying camp to control the number of stray dogs. Thakur, Head of Animal Services Branch, said that the budget for dog neutering program will also be increased.

The sub-metropolitan animal service branch has also requested the city residents to help the municipal employees to catch the ground black dog. Efforts are being made to reduce the problem of rabies infection in humans, increase in road accidents, and increase in foul odors due to the problem of black dogs.
