Sunkoshi Marin Diversion: Only 110 meters left to dig the tunnel

Apr 20, Kathmandu- 110 meters of the tunnelling work of the Sunkoshi Marin Diversion Project, which is a project of national pride, is left to be dug. Considerable success has been achieved in the construction process which was started with the goal of providing irrigation facilities in different districts of Terai-Madhesh within 12 months. Mitra Baral, the head of the Sunkoshi Marin Diversion Project, informed that if there are no geographical complications, the final preparations will be made to 'breakthrough' the tunnel on Baisakh 26.

Out of a total of 13.3 kilometers of tunnels, 13.190 kilometers of tunnels have been completed so far. Chief Baral said that 31 megawatts of electricity will also be generated from the project. The construction of the project's tunnel is being done by the Chinese company China Overseas Engineering.

According to the builders, the construction of the dam and powerhouse will be completed within the stipulated time even if there is some delay. The goal is to complete the project in Ashwin 2084. Although it has been a long time since the construction of the tunnel in the Bheri Babai Diversion Project was completed, the government is equally careful to prevent the disruption caused by the construction of the dam and powerhouse not progressing.

After the completion of the project, irrigation facilities will be available throughout the year in the five districts of Central Terai, which are granaries. About 67 cusecs of water from Sunkosi will be pumped into the Marin River at Kusumtar, Kamalamai Municipality-2 of Sindhuli through a tunnel. After that, using the infrastructure of Bagmati Irrigation Project, it is aimed to irrigate about 122,000 hectares of land in Dhanusha, Mahottari, Sarlahi, Rautahat and Bara.

The project will bring a qualitative change in food production. Preliminary preparations have been made to construct the Furkot-Phulbari tunnel using the TBM equipment used in that project. It is possible to make some changes to the TBM and construct a tunnel used in road infrastructure.
