Anti-tax hike protests in Kenya: 39 dead, 361 injured

Jul 02, Kathmandu- Al Jazeera reports that at least 39 people have died in recent anti-government protests in Kenya against a new bill on tax increases.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) announced the death toll on Monday. KNCHR records indicate 39 deaths and 361 injuries "in connection with nationwide protests". This data covers the period from June 18 to July 1, according to the statement of the commission.

A peaceful anti-tax rally led by mostly young protesters turned into a shocking scene of deadly violence after parliament passed the controversial law last week.

President William Ruto said in a television interview on Sunday that 19 people were killed in the protests. He said he had no involvement in the incident and promised to investigate the death.

The Commission has also strongly condemned the violent and shocking act of anarchy by some protesters in Parliament and other government buildings.
