Law Minister's Commitment To Amend The Rape Act

Aug 09, Kathmandu- Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ajay Kumar Chaurasia has promised to amend the law related to forced labor.

On Friday, in the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives, the parliamentarians said that there are more accused and convicts in cases related to rape cases in juvenile correctional homes and prisons. They said that this has happened due to some provisions of the current law.

"In response, Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Chaurasia promised to amend the law related to rape cases. The mind goes together. After returning, the family and society changes. And it is a trap to use Madda. Even if there is no evidence, it seems that the case will be prosecuted and left for later. If there is an instruction from the parliamentary committee, it will be improved," said Chaurisia.

He also said that he thought that 'rape cases should be classified'. There is a current law in Nepal that considers sexual relations under the age of 18 as forced.

Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Member of Parliament Sovita Gautham reminded that there is a provision that if both the boy and the girl are under 18 years of age and have physical relations, the boy will be deemed to have committed rape.

CPN Maoist Center Member of Parliament Ram Kumar Rai also said that child marriage turns into rape. There was a mistake when making the law! "Child marriage and rape are different issues, but child marriage turns into rape," he said.

The Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives has conducted an on-site study of Biratnagar, Birganj and Banke juvenile correctional homes and prisons.

Separate reports have been prepared for Biratnagar, Birganj and Banke children's correctional homes and prisons. In the discussion on the report, the parliamentarians emphasized that the government should come up with a proposal on how to interpret rape and rape-related incidents.
