Sep 02, Kathmandu- At least 59 people have died in 11 affected districts due to floods in Bangladesh and more than 5.3 million people have been affected.
Low-income farmers have also lost their livelihoods, including homes, due to crop drains and floods.
65-year-old Tabah Nurun Begum of Mirpara village in Kulaura upazila of Maulvibazar said that she had no place to stay after her mud house was swept away by the flood.
Suzan Mia, an autorickshaw driver from the same village, said that even though the flood waters have receded, the damaged house could not be returned to the house as the house was submerged due to the collapse of the embankment on the banks of the Manu river after the rains.
Jamshed Ali, a resident of Mirpara, mentioned that he was worried about how to save his family as he was cultivating a vegetable garden as his only source of income.
According to Maulvibazar District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Mohammad Sadu Mia, around 8,786 houses have been damaged due to recent floods in the district.
He said that he has sent a letter to the relevant higher authorities demanding rehabilitation of the flood victims.
Burichang Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shahida Akhtar informed that around 40,000 houses have been damaged in this area.
According to a government report published on Sunday, even though the flood situation is gradually improving, more than seven lakh families are still displaced due to floods across the country.
According to the report of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, floods have reduced in the districts of Chattogram, Feni, Khagrachari, Habiganj, Sylhet, Brahmanbaria and Cox's Bazar.
Meanwhile, the flood situation has improved in Maulvi Bazar and the situation in Kumila, Noakhali and Lakshmipur is gradually improving, the statement said.
According to the report, currently seven lakh five thousand 52 families are still inundated.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center said in a bulletin on Sunday that there is a possibility that the flood situation will improve across the country as the flow of most of the major rivers is decreasing.
