May 29, Kathmandu- Min Gurung, a Nepali-born resident of the United States, has been arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He was detained on May 21 for allegedly engaging in hate speech, threats, and defamation through social media platforms.
Gurung, who has been active on various social media sites, including TikTok, is currently held in a detention center in Huntington, West Virginia. He faces accusations of broadcasting abusive and threatening content targeting the Nepali and Bhutanese communities. These actions have sparked protests from members of both communities, who have expressed concerns about the impact on social harmony.
The arrest followed an initial investigation triggered by a complaint received by authorities. Gurung has been charged with violating immigration laws, hate speech, and spreading hostility between communities. He is expected to appear before an immigration court soon.
