Nepal Teachers' Federation Announces Resumption of Protest Over Unaddressed Concerns in School Education Bill

Aug 22, Kathmandu - The Nepal Teachers' Federation is set to resume its agitation, saying that the School Education Bill has not been addressed as agreed. The federation held a press conference on Friday and made public the first phase of the agitation programs.

Nepal Teachers Federation President Laxmi Kishore Subedi said that although the bill is positive, it has not addressed the concerns of teachers and employees and issues that were agreed upon in the past.

He said, "Although the bill is positive on some other issues, issues of concern to teaching staff and those in previous agreements have not been addressed. Issues such as the percentage of internal examinations prescribed for the permanence of temporary teachers not being as per the agreement (75 percent internal), not being specified under the Golden Handshake, and not including provision for periodic promotion of permanent teachers appear to have not been addressed."

He said that a School Education Act is needed to resolve the problems that have been lingering in school education for years and provide advanced and quality school education, adding that issues agreed upon in the past should be addressed through the act.
