Sep 01, Kathmandu - The death toll from the earthquake in Afghanistan has reached 622.

Abdul Mateen Kani, spokesman of the Ministry of Interior of Afghanistan, has informed that 622 people have died so far from the 6.3 Richter scale earthquake that occurred on Sunday night. He said that 1,555 people have been injured so far and a large number of houses have been destroyed.

He said that 610 of the dead were in Kunar and 12 in Nangarhar, while 1,300 of the injured were in Kunar and 255 in Nangarhar.

Relief and rescue operations are currently underway and the death toll is expected to rise.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 160 kilometers below the ground. Its tremors were felt as far as Islamabad and Abbottabad in Pakistan. After the first earthquake, tremors of 4.7, 4.3 and 5.0 on the Richter scale were also felt, according to Tolonews.

Earlier, on October 7, 2023, a devastating earthquake struck Afghanistan. The Taliban government claimed that 4,000 people died in this earthquake, while the United Nations confirmed that 1,500 people died. Afghanistan has a history of powerful earthquakes. The Hindu Kush mountain range is considered seismically active, where earthquakes occur every year. Afghanistan is located between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This fault line runs as far as Herat in Afghanistan. Earthquakes occur when the plates move.
