Earthquake in Afghanistan: Death toll reaches 610

Sep 01, Kathmandu - The death toll from an earthquake in Afghanistan has reached 610. The Taliban's Interior Ministry has said that the death toll from an earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has reached 610. According to the ministry, more than 1,300 people have been injured.

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan's Nangarhar and Kunar provinces at 11:47 p.m. Sunday. Its depth was 8 kilometers. Since then, at least three more earthquakes have struck, ranging in intensity from 4.5 to 5.2.

The quake was felt as far away as Kabul, the Afghan capital, and Islamabad, the Pakistani capital, according to news agency AFP. Most of the damage from the quake was reported in Kunar province, which is about 90 percent mountainous.

Roads leading to the earthquake-hit areas are very narrow and many of them have been closed due to landslides. Taliban officials say they have limited resources and have appealed for helicopters and assistance from international organizations to reach the affected areas.
