Floods Caused By Heavy Rainfall Result in Multiple Deaths and Displacement in Indonesia

Sep 11, Kathmandu - Floods triggered by heavy rainfall have killed at least 19 people and left 10 missing on Indonesia's Bali island and East Nusa Tenggara province.

Gusti Ayu Ketut Wijayanti, a spokeswoman for the national search and rescue agency in Bali, said flash floods had killed 13 people in Bali alone and left six missing. There were also reports of 18 landslides and flooding in various areas.

The country's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said up to 150 millimetres of rain was recorded in parts of Bali between Tuesday and Wednesday, and warned of continued heavy rain throughout the week.

Floods in East Nusa Tenggara province have caused widespread damage to homes and farmland, forcing residents to flee to higher ground. Six people have died and four are missing, according to Gasper Losa Manisa, head of the provincial disaster management and mitigation agency's emergency unit. Rescue operations are ongoing.

Indonesia's rainy season typically runs from November to April. The risk of flooding, landslides and related diseases is high during this period. But experts say the rainy season is getting longer due to climate change and the intensity of rainfall has increased in recent years, making the disasters more severe.
