ICC Suspends USA Cricket Over Governance Failures

Sep 24, Kathmandu - The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended USA Cricket's membership with immediate effect, citing repeated failures to meet its obligations. Despite the suspension, US teams will still be able to compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The ICC Board took the decision due to the organization's "repeated breaches of its obligations as a member under the constitution."

A statement released on Tuesday night specified these breaches, including the "failure to implement a functional governance structure and a lack of progress in achieving national governing body status with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC)." The ICC also stated the suspension was based on actions that harmed the reputation of US cricket and the sport globally, though it did not provide specific details.

In the meantime, the US men's team will still participate in the T20 World Cup next February, with its management temporarily overseen by the ICC. The team's strong performance, reaching the Super Eight stage of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, had already secured it a direct place in the 2026 tournament.

The ICC described the suspension as an "unfortunate but necessary step to protect the long-term interests of the game." It emphasized that its top priority is to ensure that players and the sport itself are not affected by the suspension.

USA Cricket was previously put on notice during the 2024 ICC Annual General Meeting for "failing to meet membership criteria" and was given 12 months to make the necessary improvements.
