Sep 26, Kathmandu - Although dengue infections have been on the rise in Kathmandu in recent years, this year the number of infections has started to increase again. This year (since the beginning of the year) 248 people have been confirmed to have dengue in Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
According to the Shukraraj Tropical and Infectious Diseases Hospital, Teku, in 2022, 9,886 people in Kathmandu were confirmed to have dengue. Then, in 2023, 1,714 people were infected, in 2024, 2,984 people were infected, and in 2025, 227 people were infected.
Although the hospital data does not mention the municipality in the address of the infected person, most of the infected people are from the Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
According to Rishi Prasad Bhusal, focal person for the Epidemic Disease Control Program of the Metropolitan City, dengue was first detected in Kathmandu in 2018 (BS 2075) in a woman in the Chamati area. After that, the infection was also seen in a person in the Balaju area. According to him, there is a tendency for dengue infections to increase in some years and decrease in others.
Since the Aedes mosquito that spreads dengue thrives in clean, stagnant water, Kathmandu Metropolitan City has intensified its campaign to identify mosquito habitats and destroy their larvae. This campaign involves the active participation of health workers, female volunteers, and local residents.
