36 Killed in Stampede at Actor Vijay's Rally in Tamil Nadu

Sep 28, Kathmandu - On Saturday evening, a tragic stampede occurred during actor-turned-politician Vijay's rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, resulting in the deaths of 36 people.

Tamil Nadu Health Minister M.A. Subramanian stated that among the deceased are 16 women and 8 children. Over 58 individuals have been injured in the incident. Authorities fear that the death toll may rise further.

According to Indian media reports, a large crowd had gathered for the rally organized by Vijay's political party, Tamilaga Vazhvu Kazhagam (TVK).

Meanwhile, a 9-year-old girl went missing amid the chaos. Vijay appealed to police and supporters from the stage to help locate her, which triggered a rush among the crowd.

Many people struggled to breathe due to being trapped in the dense crowd, with several fainting or losing consciousness. Recognizing the deteriorating situation, Vijay halted his speech and urged calm among the attendees.

The rally was officially permitted for 10,000 people. However, authorities estimated that approximately 50,000 individuals attended, with reports suggesting the actual crowd was around 120,000.

During his address, actor Vijay urged the crowd to stay calm amid the chaos.

In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced compensation of 1 million rupees to the families of each deceased.

Additionally, a one-member inquiry commission led by former High Court Justice Aruna Jagdishan has been formed to investigate the incident, according to Indian media sources.
