Kathmandu Schools Designated as Shelters as Flood Risk Rises

Oct 04, Kathmandu - The Education Department of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has instructed all community and institutional schools to prepare for disaster management as the risk of inundation increases. The directive comes as residents living in high-risk settlements near riverbanks are being relocated to nearby schools.

According to the KMC Disaster Management Department, water levels in rivers, including the Bagmati and Bishnumati, are under continuous surveillance.

Through coordination with local ward members, schools in areas such as Thali, Baneshwor, and.
Koteshwor have been designated and identified as temporary shelters.

The schools have been instructed to ensure basic necessities such as: toilets, drinking water, safe and sheltered spaces which are prepared to accommodate displaced residents who may lack shelter, sleeping, and protected areas during a disaster.

Schools have also been directed to actively assist in rescue and relief operations.

The Metropolitan City confirmed that technical teams deployed to previously affected areas are maintaining continuous monitoring to assess and mitigate immediate risks.
