Oct 04, Kathmandu - A basic hospital in Darwang, Malika Rural Municipality-6, Myagdi, successfully managed the complicated delivery of a newborn who was born in a critical condition, having been inverted in the womb and suffering from asphyxia during birth.
The patient, a 17-year-old girl from Okharbot, Malika Rural Municipality-4, arrived at the hospital, operated by the rural municipality at 10:30 AM on Friday, seven hours after labor began. This was her first pregnancy.
According to the hospital's Information Officer and Public Health Inspector, Yaman Nepali, the first-time mother was at 37 weeks and one day of gestation, and the baby was in a breech position (inverted). Due to the mother's young age and the baby's position, both lives were at risk. During birth, the baby's head got stuck, leading to asphyxia and causing the newborn's body to turn blue.
The newborn was born blue, with a heart rate below 100 beats per minute, low respiratory rate, and no body movement.
Public Health Inspector Nepali and Senior Nurse Deepa Pariyar managed the delivery with continuous guidance and consultation from Dr. Ramchandra Bastola, a Senior Pediatric Specialist at Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences, and doctors at Beni Hospital.
The successful resuscitation effort, which took nearly two hours, returned the newborn to a stable condition, marking a significant success for the local medical facility.
