Oct 30, Kathmandu - The Japanese government has decided to provide a grant of 2.8 billion yen (approximately 2.6 billion Nepalese rupees) for the emergency reconstruction of the flood-affected Sindhuli road.
The agreement for this grant was signed by Japanese Ambassador Maeda Toru and Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Ghana Shyam Upadhyay, in the presence of Finance Minister Rameshwor Prasad Khanal and Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal at the agreement and note exchange ceremony.
The Sindhuli Road is a 160-kilometer-long road that connects the central and eastern Terai with Kathmandu. The construction of this road was supported by Japanese grant assistance (25.8 billion yen) from 1995 to 2015. However, in September 2024, after continuous heavy rainfall, more than 10 kilometers of the road were damaged by flooding. This has seriously affected the local economy, people's lives, trade, and transportation.
The Japanese government has stated that it intends to promote sustainable economic development in Nepal by providing assistance for the reconstruction and improvement of this road. It is believed that this road will serve as a major transportation route for Nepal in the future and will become a symbol representing Japan-Nepal friendship.
