Thapathali Traffic Police Post to be Demolished Tomorrow

Nov 01, Kathmandu - Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) police are set to demolish the Traffic Police post located in Thapathali, sparking controversy. The demolition is scheduled for tomorrow, with Police Chief Rajunath Pandey personally overseeing the operation at the Kalmochan complex, where the beat is situated. While illegal structures in the area have been removed previously, the police station building itself has not been targeted until now.

Speaking to News of Nepal, Police Chief Pandey confirmed, "We will demolish the illegal structures in the area tomorrow. The police beat building will also be taken down."

According to him, preparations are underway to dismantle other illegal structures in the vicinity as well. When asked about the selective demolition—why only the police beat and not other illegal constructions—Pandey explained, "The reason for demolishing the traffic police beat is because other illegal structures are also being removed. If we start demolishing only police buildings, it raises questions."

The police are reportedly planning to relocate the equipment and belongings from the beat to alternative locations before demolition.

Sources reveal that the move to demolish the beat may be linked to ongoing tensions between KMC Mayor Balendra Shah and the Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, with some speculating that the police's action is in retaliation. However, the KMC has denied any political motive, stating that all illegal structures must be removed, including police facilities built unlawfully.

Two years ago, Kathmandu Metropolitan City had already demolished illegal structures on sidewalks and public land. Now, authorities plan to remove all remaining illegal constructions, including the police beat building, as part of their ongoing urban cleanup efforts.
