Nov 02, Kathmandu- Kathmandu Valley is facing escalating waste management issues as local residents have halted waste disposal at the Banchareddha Landfill Site. Following unmet commitments from authorities, residents have refused to allow waste-laden vehicles to access the landfill since Friday.
Urban Development Minister Kulman Ghising visited the site on Sunday morning after locals expressed their frustration over the failure to implement previously agreed-upon arrangements. The residents, particularly from Dhunbeshi Municipality-1, demand scientific and systematic waste disposal methods as per the 18-point agreement made earlier.
According to Deependra Lama, a local resident, the protest is in response to the non-implementation of agreements related to waste management at the Sisdol Banchareddha-Kundule landfill site. The residents have insisted they will not permit waste dumping until their demands are addressed.
The 18-point agreement, signed on June 9, 2022, with Kathmandu Metropolitan City, stipulates that waste should only be dumped at night, foul odors must be minimized, waste vehicles should avoid spillage, and scientific measures should be adopted to prevent pollution in the Lichchhadh River after waste disposal.
The ongoing protest highlights the urgent need for effective waste management solutions in Kathmandu Valley to prevent further environmental and health hazards.
