Tension in Madhesh After Unconstitutional Government Formed on UML Chairman Oli's Instructions

Nov 10, Kathmandu - There are allegations that an unconstitutional government was formed in Madhesh Province under the direction of UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, trampling on the core principles of federalism and democracy.

There has been intense discontent in Madhesh after provincial chief Sumitra Bhandari, who is close to the UML, appointed a UML lawmaker as the Chief Minister, in gross violation of the constitution and parliamentary tradition.

Bhandari, who traveled from Janakpur, the capital of Madhesh Province, to Kathmandu under the pretext of illness, arrived at Bardibas, on the border of Mahottari and Sindhuli, and administered the oath of office to UML provincial lawmaker Saroj Yadav (Mahottari) as the Chief Minister of Madhesh Province at a hotel before dawn, sparking intense discontent in Madhesh.

Bhandari, who is close to the CPN-UML, was appointed as the provincial chief during KP Oli's tenure. The intense discontent has spread after provincial chief Bhandari formed the government in accordance with Article 168(3) of the Constitution of Nepal, amid the ongoing process of government formation and dissolution in Madhesh Province.

On Sunday evening alone, all political parties in the Madhesh parliament, except for the CPN-UML, drew the attention of the provincial chief to form a government under Article 168(2).
