KMC Collaborates with NT to Build a Smart Surveillance Network

Nov 15, Kathmandu - Kathmandu Metropolitan City has initiated a collaboration with Nepal Telecom to use the network required for CCTV cameras to be connected in its geographical area.

According to Dhubra Kumar Kafle, Head of the Administration Department of KMC, the collaboration with the telecom has been initiated to provide local internet through optical fiber network, FTTH (Fiber to the Home) for CCTV networks in ward offices.

An agreement has also been reached with KMC and Nepal Telecom to provide CCTV camera footage to each surveillance room. Along with this, the telecom will provide services for regular maintenance, restoration of emergency damage, technical support, service expansion capacity, structure for continuity of service in emergency situations, network monitoring, and identification and resolution of service disruptions.

The Municipality will arrange for the equipment and supplies, including CCTV cameras and routers. The Telecom will provide the high-speed bandwidth required in the future. Similarly, changes in technology will be updated and regularized.

Kafle said that KMC has taken this initiative to make the city safer and smart through the use of technology and to bring results without any complaints through intergovernmental coordination and collaboration.

Since the telecom already has an optical fiber network, KMC is in a position to immediately receive the CCTV footage it has installed earlier, said Anirudra Nepal, head of the KMC Information Technology Department.

Telecom will fulfill the responsibility of delivering the scenes captured by the CCTV cameras to the surveillance room. The system can connect CCTVs that have been installed previously, those installed through regular and sequential plans, those installed and those to be installed from wards, departments and other places of demand.

This agreement is in the context of collaborating to develop and expand technology-based systems to make Kathmandu automated, safe and manageable. Accordingly, Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) will be used in the CCTV surveillance room of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Ward Office and public places within it.
