Nov 18, Kathmandu - The situation in Bangladesh is tense, according to reports. The situation has worsened after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death.
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) sentenced Hasina to death on Monday for crimes against humanity related to the violent suppression of student protests last year. Following the verdict against Hasina, a group of students once again vandalized her ancestral home. Two people were killed in the process.
According to a report in the Dhaka Tribune, a group of Dhaka College students arrived with a bulldozer at the Dhanmandi-32 area, home to the historic home of Sheikh Hasina’s father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. They had planned to demolish it. However, security forces had already blocked the road. When the crowd started breaking barricades, the police used batons, sound grenades and force to disperse them. The army was deployed at various locations to control the situation.
Hasina's house, which was partially burned down during protests last year, remains under tight security. There have also been reports of arson, bombings and political clashes in Dhaka and other cities. According to local media, about 50 vehicles were torched before and after the verdict.
Violence has been witnessed in sensitive areas like Gopalganj, Moulvibazar, Ghazipur and Ashulia. The verdict has left the nation divided. Families of the deceased students and opposition supporters have distributed sweets, calling it a victory for justice, while Sheikh Hasina's party, the Awami League, has called for a shutdown.
