Nov 28, Kathmandu - Tensions between China and Japan have recently escalated. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on November 7 that if China were to fight to control Taiwan, it could create an existential crisis for Japan. In such a situation, she said, Japan would have legal protection to deploy troops with the consent of the United States.
China considers Taiwan as its own, while all countries in the world that adhere to the One China policy do not have independent diplomatic relations with Taiwan. China has expressed strong opposition to this statement by the Japanese Prime Minister. China has not only opposed it diplomatically, but has also reached out to the United Nations with economic sanctions.
China has warned its citizens not to travel to Japan. But last Wednesday, Takaichi's remarks sparked a debate in the Japanese parliament. The main opposition party tried to calm the issue. But China is adamant about withdrawing the statement. Amid the tensions, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi spoke by phone with US President Donald Trump.
