Singapore Announces New Policy Banning Smartphone and Smartwatch Use During School Hours Starting January 2026

Dec 02, Kathmandu - In a move to promote healthier screen habits among students, the Singapore government has announced a new policy that will prohibit secondary school students from using smartphones and smartwatches during school hours beginning January 2026.

Previously, students were only allowed to use their devices during class time. However, the Ministry of Education revealed on Sunday that this step is aimed at encouraging better screen time practices and enhancing students' overall well-being.

Under the new regulation, students will be required to store their mobile phones and smartwatches in designated safe areas or their school bags. The school may grant exemptions in special cases if deemed necessary.

According to the Ministry, excessive screen use among students has been observed to interfere with their sleep schedules, physical activities, and social interactions with family and friends, ultimately affecting their overall health.
