Ukraine-US talks: Peace process focused on Russia's role

Dec 06, Kathmandu - Ukrainian and US officials will hold a third day of talks in Miami on Saturday. The US side said that real progress, as agreed by both sides, will depend on Russia’s serious commitment to long-term peace.

US President Donald Trump’s special envoys Steven Witkoff and Jared Kushner have been holding talks with Ukraine’s top negotiator Rustam Umerov and Kyiv’s military chief Andriy Khnatov.

The talks began after a meeting with Russia. Witkoff and Kushner discussed the US proposal with President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin on Tuesday.

The US and Ukraine also agreed on the basic framework for a security system and the resilience needed to maintain long-term peace.

Under the US proposal, Ukraine is prepared to surrender territory that Russia has not captured on the battlefield. The initial plan mentions the possibility of establishing a military base in Poland to defend Kyiv.
