Google Unveils its First AI-based Glasses, Competing Directly with Meta

Dec 09, Kathmandu - Google is set to unveil its first AI-powered glasses in 2026. The company appears to be poised to compete with Meta in the consumer-focused AI device market.

The company plans to launch two types of glasses: audio-only and in-lens display. The audio-only glasses will allow users to speak to the AI assistant, while the in-lens display glasses will have a display inside the lens, which will show users information such as navigation directions and language translations.

Google is collaborating with Samsung, Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to design the hardware for the devices. Google committed $150 million to Warby Parker in May. Warby Parker said in a filing Monday that it expects to release its first glasses in partnership with Google in 2026.

The glasses will be built on Android XR, the operating system designed for Google's headsets. Google co-founder Sergey Brin said that he learned from the failures of previous smart glasses, saying that in today's AI world, these glasses have a very high potential and can help the user without constantly distracting them.

Meta's foray into the AI wearables market is gaining momentum. Meta's Ray-Ban Meta glasses, designed in partnership with eyewear company EssilorLuxottica, were a surprise hit.

Meta also unveiled its own display glasses in September, which allow users to view messages, photo previews, and live captions through a small display built into the lenses. Other companies like Snap and Alibaba are also bringing their own AI glasses to this competitive market.
