Dec 12, Kathmandu - Police have arrested Anup Kumar Singh, who cheated by claiming to be the 'nephew' of former King Gyanendra Shah. Singh was arrested from Jhapa and brought to Kathmandu on charges of cheating, according to the Valley Crime Investigation Office.
Singh, who lives in Lalitpur after leaving Kathmandu Metropolitan City-27, was arrested from Dhulabari, Jhapa while fleeing to India. His accomplice, Laddu Shrestha, who hails from Dolakha, has also been arrested.
Singh is accused of defrauding more than 50 people from Sindhuli Ghyanglek by claiming that a hotel named Dreamland was going to be opened in the UK with the investment of the former royal family. Singh, who identifies himself as Manoj Kumar, was previously arrested in a fraud case and sent to jail on Chaitra 1, 2081. Investigation revealed that after being released from jail, he started the fraud business again.
The police have started an investigation by obtaining a 5-day remand from the court against the accused. So far, 42 victims have filed complaints against Singh, who says he is also associated with the Himani Trust. So far, a complaint of fraud of Rs 40 million has been filed against Singh and his associate Shrestha.
Police have recovered a government seal and a fake UK visa from the office run by Singh in Gyaneshwor, Kathmandu.
