Dec 13, Kathmandu - The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, Alice Jill Edwards, has called on the Pakistani government to take immediate and effective action regarding reports about former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s treatment in custody. She warned that the conditions he faces could constitute torture or other inhumane and degrading treatment.
In her statement, Edwards urged Pakistani authorities to ensure that Imran Khan’s detention conditions fully comply with international standards and norms.
Since September 26, 2023, when Khan was transferred to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, he has reportedly been kept in prolonged solitary confinement. Sources indicate he is confined in a solitary cell for up to 23 hours a day, with extremely limited contact with the outside world. Additionally, Edwards noted that Khan is under continuous camera surveillance within his cell.
The UN expert emphasized that prolonged solitary confinement violates international human rights laws. If such confinement exceeds 15 days, it is considered a form of torture.
Edwards called for the immediate end to Khan’s solitary confinement, warning that it is not only illegal but also poses severe risks to his physical and mental health. She highlighted that Khan is not allowed to engage in outdoor activities, meet other inmates, or participate in communal prayers. Contact with legal representatives, family members, and others is reportedly restricted or cut short.
This development has raised international concerns over the treatment of political detainees in Pakistan, with human rights advocates urging prompt action to prevent further violations.
