KP Sharma Oli Secures Historic Third Consecutive Term as UML Chairman

Dec 18, Kathmandu - KP Sharma Oli has scored a hat-trick as the chairman of the CPN-UML. Oli has secured a hat-trick by being elected as the party chairman for the third consecutive term. He has been in the role of the party chairman continuously since 2071 Shrawan.

When the final results of the 11th general convention held at Bhrikutimandap on Thursday were announced, Oli was elected with 1,663 votes. His only competitor, Ishwor Pokharel, received a total of 564 votes.

In the ninth general convention held at Bhrikutimandap in Asadha 2071, Oli had narrowly defeated the then general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal for the post of president. At that time, Oli won by getting 1,047 votes, while Nepal received 1,03 votes.

After the UML split in Bhadra in 2078 BS, Oli wanted to become the unanimous chairman at the 10th general convention held in Sauraha, Chitwan, but he had to go through the voting process after former vice president Dr. Bhim Rawal filed his candidacy. Oli won the convention with 1,837 votes, while Rawal received 223 votes.

The then Prime Minister Oli, who was ousted from power in the Gen-Z rebellion on Bhadhra 23 and 24, strengthened his grip on the leadership by organizing the regular general convention a year earlier after the debate over the leadership transfer became complicated within the party.
