Dec 27, Kathmandu - Thailand and Cambodia agreed on Saturday to an immediate ceasefire. Both countries have pledged to end weeks of border fighting and establish peace. At least 47 people have been killed and more than 100,000 people have been displaced in the past three weeks.
According to the agreement, both sides will stop using all types of weapons, refrain from any attacks on civilians and infrastructure, and allow citizens living in the border area to return home as soon as possible. Both countries have also pledged to cooperate in combating cybercrime.
The ceasefire came after three days of border talks, brokered by ASEAN, the United States, China and Malaysia. The dispute began over an old colonial border, where both countries claim an ancient temple.
Thailand’s prime minister has called for a final agreement, saying he will maintain peace and help civilians return home. Thailand is due to hold a general election on February 8.
