Trump's Draft Agreement Would Give Ukraine a 15-year Security Guarantee

Dec 29, Kathmandu - The U.S. will provide strong security guarantees to Ukraine, but not forever, the Ukrainian president told reporters. He made the remarks after a conversation with Trump.

“The documents say it’s for 15 years, there’s also a possibility of extending these security guarantees. I raised this issue with the president, I told him that we’re fighting a war and it’s been going on for almost 15 years, so I really wanted the guarantees to last longer,” Zelensky said.

Zelenskyy said that by 15 years, he meant the period from 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine. Backed by Russian fighters, Russian-backed rebels had also seized most of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Zelensky wants security guarantees to be given for 30, 40, or 50 years. Zelensky also said that Trump said he would think about it after hearing his words.
