Dec 30, Kathmandu - Today, the Gurung community is celebrating Tamu Lhosar festival with great pomp. It is customary to celebrate Tamu Lhosar festival today by saying goodbye to the old year and welcoming the new year. Since Lho means ‘year’ and ‘sar’ means change, the day when the year changes is called ‘Tamu Lhosar’. The government has decided to declare a public holiday today on the occasion of Tamu Lhosar.
Tamu Lhosar festival is associated with the rays of the sun. In the Gurung-dominated districts of Lamjung, Gorkha, Tanahun, Syangja, Manang, Kaski, Parbat and other places, this festival is celebrated in Poush as the sun's heat comes first. It is believed that after this, in the areas inhabited by the Tamang and Sherpa tribes, this festival is celebrated in Magh and Falgun as the sun's heat comes first.
This festival is celebrated with great pomp in districts where Gurungs are in the majority. On this occasion, Tamu Lhosar is also being celebrated with grandeur in Tundikhel, Kathmandu. The Tamu community living in Kathmandu has organized a special program on Tuesday. A cultural exhibition with traditional costumes was held in the program. An exhibition of special dishes of the Gurung community has been put up in the program.
