Jan 03, Kathmandu - The long-running conflict in Yemen has once again taken a violent turn. The Saudi-led military coalition carried out airstrikes on the bases of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council on Friday.
At least 20 separatist fighters were killed in the attack. The operation came at a time when the United Arab Emirates recently announced the end of its military presence in Yemen.
According to an AFP report, the airstrikes targeted military bases in the Sayyun and Al-Khasha areas of Hadramaut province. A military base and an airport were also targeted, causing air traffic to grind to a halt in the area.
No aircraft were operating for several hours, creating a climate of fear among civilians.
Before the airstrikes, the UAE announced the withdrawal of its last military forces from Yemen.
Southern Transitional Council leaders have accused Saudi-backed forces of breaking trust. They had promised to peacefully take control of the military bases, but airstrikes were launched immediately afterward.
