‘Nayak’ Sequel Possible After 25 Years, Actor Anil Kapoor Acquires Rights

Jan 04, Kathmandu - Released in 2001, the Bollywood film ‘Nayak’ starring Anil Kapoor, Rani Mukerji and Amrish Puri became a superhit at the box office. The film is still a ‘cult classic’ in India.

25 years after its release, speculations about a sequel have been quelled. According to Indian media, actor Kapoor has bought the rights to the film.

According to a recent report in Bollywood Hungama, Kapoor has bought the rights from Deepak Mukut, the producer of hit films like ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’. ‘The film is very close to the heart of the lead actor Anil Kapoor, so he wants to retain the rights. He also wants to make a sequel to it,’ the description says.

‘He is well aware of the love the film has received from the audience over the years and believes that the hero’s theme has the potential for a sequel,’ it says.

Starring Anil Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, Pooja Batra, Amrish Puri and Paresh Rawal, the film was a hit in 2001. It was a Hindi remake of Shankar's South film Madhubala (1999).

It is also the only Hindi film directed by Nayak Shankar. He has also directed blockbuster films like Shivaji: The Boss, I, and Robot 2.0.

There have been rumours of a sequel to 'Nayak' for a long time in Bollywood. In 2013, there were reports that Kapoor would be making a sequel to Nayak, 'Nayak Returns'.

However, the makers did not make any official announcement. There was talk of a sequel in 2017 as well. At that time, Kiwi Vijayendra Prasad was writing the screenplay of the film and its post-production was said to have begun in 2017 itself.
