Thailand Accuses Cambodia of Violating Ceasefire

Jan 06, Kathmandu - Cambodia on Tuesday accused Thailand of violating a ceasefire, saying it had fired mortar rounds across the border, injuring a Thai soldier.

The decades-old border dispute between the Southeast Asian nations has erupted into military clashes several times in the past year, with fighting in December killing dozens and displacing nearly a million people on both sides.

The two countries agreed to a ceasefire on December 27, ending three weeks of fighting. The Thai military said in a statement on Tuesday that Cambodia had violated the ceasefire, accusing the Cambodian army of firing mortar rounds into Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani province. The Thai military said one Thai soldier was injured in the exchange of fire.

The Thai military said the Cambodian side did not intend to contact the Thai military unit and fire into Thai territory, but rather that the Cambodian personnel had mishandled their weapons. The Thai military warned the Cambodian military to be careful, saying Thailand would retaliate if a similar incident occurred.

Cambodian Defense Ministry spokesman Mali Socheta said on Tuesday that two Cambodian soldiers were wounded, one seriously, in Preah Vihear province.
