Jan 08, Kathmandu - The United States has withdrawn from 66 United Nations (UN) and international organizations. US President Donald Trump has signed a plan to withdraw the United States from the aforementioned organizations. This includes major forums for cooperation on climate change, peace and democracy, Al Jazeera reported.
In a presidential memo shared by the White House on Wednesday evening, Trump said the decision came after a review of organizations, conventions and treaties that were detrimental to the United States.
Trump announced that the United States would withdraw from these organizations and cut all aid funding under the agreement.
According to the White House, there are 35 non-UN organizations, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Although the IPCC is listed as a non-UN body by the White House, it is a United Nations organization. It brings together top scientists to assess the evidence on climate change and provides periodic scientific assessments to inform political leaders.
In addition, the White House said it would withdraw from 31 UN bodies, including the UN's top climate change treaty body, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UN Democracy Fund, and the top UN agency working on maternal and child health, UNFPA.
The US has considerable power at the UN as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Since taking office in January last year, Trump has already withdrawn the US from the World Health Organisation, the Paris climate agreement and the UN Human Rights Council.
Trump withdrew from all three of these organisations during his first administration. However, the administration of former US President Joe Biden reinstated them.
