Jan 08, Kathmandu - The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office is celebrating Traffic Week. The aim of the week is to spread traffic awareness and reduce accidents, injuries and deaths due to accidents, informed SSP Nawaraj Adhikari of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office.
IGP Dan Bahadur Karki will inaugurate the traffic week on Paush 26. It is said that the week will conclude on Magh 3, creating a citizen-friendly traffic environment. A rally has been organized from Basantapur to Ramshahpath before the inauguration.
During the week-long traffic week, the Valley Traffic Police will teach pedestrians how to cross the road and conduct awareness programs targeting two-wheelers.
The aim of the week is to reduce accidents in accident-prone areas in the Kathmandu Valley, informed SP Naresh Subedi of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office. Speaking to reporters at the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office located at Ramshahpath, Subedi said, “Our aim is to improve black spots.”
Public transport drivers will also have their blood pressure, sugar and heart tested during the week. To control traffic jams in the valley, arrangements have been made to prevent long-distance vehicles from diverting from the bus park, said the SSP official. He said, "Tipper drivers drive recklessly; it is necessary to make them aware as well."
Since 2005, 105 people have lost their lives in road accidents in the Kathmandu Valley. Most of the deaths are in the age group of 17 to 35. SP Subedi says, “Of the total deaths, 72 percent are people travelling on two-wheelers.”
