Negotiation Breakdown: RSP and Ujyalo Nepal Party’s Merger Fails Amid Leadership Tensions

Jan 10, Kathmandu - The agreement to unite the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Kulman Ghising's Ujyalo Nepal Party has been broken.

The unity was broken after the Kulman faction proposed to change the party's name along with the senior vice president in the RSP, according to RSP sources.

"A senior vice president was demanded. A proposal was made to change the name of the party, reversing the previous agreement. A proposal was made that there should also be a general secretary. The unity was broken after there was no agreement on this," the leader said.

According to the three leaders, the recent discussions with Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah failed to reach an agreement.

Kulman, who resigned from the post of minister, was in discussions with RSP Chairman Rabi Lamichhane several times. While resigning, he had also said that he was not a member of any party and that even though there was an understanding with the RSP, it had not reached the implementation stage.

Earlier, even when there was an agreement between Rabi and Balen, there were discussions to include Kulman in the process. However, after the matter was not resolved, an agreement was reached with Kulman at the last minute to submit the closed list for the proportional representation.

At that time, it was also agreed to make Ghising the RSP Vice Chairman. Gen-Z campaigner Sudan Gurung claimed that he played a role in the collaboration between Kulman, RSP and Balen at the last minute.
