After Indonesia, Malaysia also bans Elon Musk's AI tool 'Grok'

Jan 12, Kathmandu - Malaysia has banned Grok, an AI tool developed by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk's company X AI. The ban was announced on Sunday after it was used to create sexually explicit content and deepfake images.

Earlier, Indonesia, another Southeast Asian country, had temporarily banned Grok. Indonesia became the first country and Malaysia the second to ban the AI tool Grok.

According to the communications ministries of these countries, Grok has been used to create offensive and obscene images of women and children. The tool is being misused, in particular, to alter images of real people to show them in nude or obscene clothing.

Malaysia's Communications and Multimedia Commission (CMC) issued a statement on Sunday saying it had already ordered X to curb abuse of Grok and tighten security measures. However, the commission clarified that X had to ban Grok because it focused only on user reporting processes rather than addressing structural vulnerabilities of the platform.

Similarly, Indonesia's Minister of Communications and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, has said that using Grok to produce sexual content is a serious violation of human rights, dignity and online safety. Indonesia has already banned sites such as 'OnlyFans' and 'Pornhub'.
