Snowfall Disrupts Highways and Electricity Services in Remote Mountainous Areas

Jan 24, Kathmandu - Heavy snowfall has disrupted highways in the hilly districts of Sudurpaschim Province. Dasharath Chand Highway and Jayaprithvi Highway have been disrupted since last night due to snowfall in Narkholi, Khodpe, Shribhavar, Satbanjh, and Dehimandu areas of Baitadi.

Baitadi Police Spokesperson, Police Inspector Suraj Singh informed that vehicular movement has been completely disrupted since last night due to the highway being disrupted. The highway has been disrupted due to snowfall and electricity service has also been shut down. He said, “The highway and electricity service have been disrupted due to heavy snowfall at night. Initiatives have been taken to resume operations.”

Similarly, the Bhimdatta Highway has also been disrupted due to snowfall in Sahukharka, Hagulte and other areas of Dadeldhura, according to the police. Since Friday evening, snowfall has been accompanied by rain in the high mountain areas of Darchula, Bajhang, Doti, and Dadeldhura, including Baitadi. Farmers here are happy after the first winter rain and snowfall this year. The winter crops here were drying up due to the lack of rain for the past four months. Farmers are happy saying that the crops will be harvested after the snowfall and rain. The extreme cold caused by the snowfall has affected normal life here.
