US releases new national defense strategy, says China is no longer a security priority

Jan 24, Kathmandu - China is no longer the top security priority for the US, according to the new National Defense Strategy of the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense. The document, which is released every four years, states that the security of the US territory and the Western Hemisphere is now its biggest concern.

In the context of the US, the Western Hemisphere mainly refers to the continents of North and South America. The 34-page document was released on Friday. The Pentagon document added that the US has long neglected the "substantial interests" of its people. The Pentagon also said that it would provide "limited" assistance to US allies.

The document follows the US National Security Strategy released last year, which said that Europe was facing a cultural decline. It did not identify Russia as a threat to the US. At the time, Russia said the document was largely consistent with its position. The previous 2022 National Defense Strategy described the multi-domain threat emanating from China as a top defense priority.

The document, released in 2018, called revisionist powers such as China and Russia the main challenges to US security.
