Jan 25, Kathmandu - Students of Tribhuvan University will now receive academic credits not only for their coursework but also for their participation and achievements in extracurricular activities, marking a first in the country.
The university has introduced a pioneering policy to formally incorporate extracurricular activities into the academic grading system through the allocation of academic credits.
According to Dr. Deependra Parajuli, Director of the Student Welfare and Sports Directorate, students who demonstrate excellence in fields such as community service, disaster management, sports, fine arts, science and technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, and management will be evaluated and awarded credits that will be reflected in their academic certificates.
He stated, “Students will not simply be awarded credits based on certificates of participation or achievement in competitions, programs, or events. Before that, all student activities will undergo monitoring, documentation, and certification through a central mechanism.”
For this purpose, each campus will be required to submit official records of student participation, hours involved, and performance in activities organized by the National Service Scheme, National Service Corps, Vice-Chancellor’s Cup sports events, fine arts, science, innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship programs each semester. These records will be authenticated and approved by the university’s Student Welfare and Sports Directorate.
Moreover, a centralized digital system will be developed to record all student activities, participation hours, and earned credits. An integrated dashboard based on Google Forms/Sheets will display the credits earned by students, the hours completed according to program requirements, and a comparative overview of participation across campuses.
Only after centralized monitoring and verification will the credits earned through certificates submitted by students be reflected in their academic transcripts.
Dr. Parajuli emphasized that this policy aims not only to enhance overall student grades but also to facilitate the identification, development, and institutional encouragement of hidden talents across various fields.
Students who excel in programs such as the National Service Scheme, National Service Corps, Vice-Chancellor’s Cup sports, fine arts, and ITAE activities will benefit directly from this system.
Additionally, students who achieve top scores in each central department may be appointed as Teaching Assistants or Research Assistants, providing them with opportunities to serve within the university. The policy also proposes special facilitation for students demonstrating excellence outside the university during the admissions process.
Dr. Parajuli informed that the draft concept note for this initiative is currently under preparation, and once approved by the Academic Council, the policy will be officially implemented.
